The forces of darkness are growing stronger, the demon-lord has been gathering his army to take over the world, a hero must rise, ect ect.
Hero(heroine) leaves home to fight through progressively stronger and stronger monsters before assaulting the demon lord's castle.
The heroine is strong, courageous and righteous.
Except you don't play as the heroine. You play as a friend who's been with her since before she started the journey. Someone (male or female) who stumbled into the village as a child and quickly became friends with the young heroine.
You're not strong or particularly heroic, but you do have powerful magic. (something almost unheard of amongst humans) which makes you absolutely vital for the heroine's journey.
Spend the whole game as an exasperated magician backing the heroine up as she gets in over her head trying to save every peasant and villager that crosses her path.
Get a lovey-dovey romance going between the two main characters, and foil the game's every attempt to NTR you with rape-orcs, goblins, slimes and the occasional H-game villager who thinks he can pull a cheap trick and get into the heroine panties.
Get to the final-boss's castle and it's revealed that you were the demon-lord the whole time. The old lord died and his kid took over, then you fucked off to go have an adventure and ran into the heroine years ago. The whole reason the demon army is massing it's forces is because your steward as getting worried after you vanished for several years, and is preparing to send people out to look for you.
